Single or double hung window?

Single-hung vs. double-hung windows: Which is best for your home?

Double hung windows are the ones that are installed the most.

The most common casement windows, both single and double sash windows, are undoubtedly practical and are particularly suitable for windows of normal size, as well as for French windows, provided that the sash does not exceed a width of 70/ 80cms. For greater widths, the movement of the doors is generally rather awkward, so sliding windows are more suitable.

What’s the difference between single-hung and double-hung windows?

The main difference between single-hung and double-hung windows is how they open. The top sash (glass panel) of a single-hung window doesn’t open (it is “fixed”), so you can only open the window by lifting the bottom sash up. A double-hung window also opens from the bottom, and in addition allows you to slide the top sash down, so you can open top, bottom, or both.

THE SINGLE SASH WINDOW

Single window can have a single sash or several sash. The one-door solution is the most modern and, at the same time, the most advantageous both in terms of insulation and the view towards the outside.

And if a window effectively insulates even if it has several sashes, there is no doubt that the single-sash window has an advantage in offering uninterrupted glazing and, therefore, a better view of the outside.

TWO DOOR WINDOWS

Double-hung window is often an obligatory choice in renovations, where there are historical or aesthetic constraints that require it. It must be considered that, being with two doors, these hardly have uncomfortable widths and therefore offer better handling when opening and less space when the window is open.

Furthermore, you can choose to open only one sash, both with hinged opening and with wasistas opening, thanks to the tilt and turn mechanism which is standard on all our windows.

Double-hung windows suit homes of various styles, including this modern farmhouse, which features both 400 Series double-hung windows and 400 Series picture windows.

There’s no bad choice when you’re picking between our single-hung and double-hung windows, but you can be strategic about selecting the one whose benefits best fit your needs in any given space.
